Soon it will be Easter and Trapani is famous throughout the world for the Procession of the Mysteries
The procession of the Mysteries, a religious event that has lasted for more than 400 years, takes place on Good Friday, where 20 statues depicting the death, passion and suffering of Jesus Christ parade for about 2 km through the city streets, in a spectacular spectacle of lights, musical notes, colors exciting and harmonizing the surrounding environment, for almost 24 hours.
A "Sacred representation", whose roots are certainly to be found in the penitential processions on the Sorrowful Mysteries, typical of the Hispanic culture, which arrived in Sicily from continuous commercial contacts and from the Spanish domination from 1412 to 1713.
The statues, sculpted in wood with the body covered in canvas and glue, were created between the 17th and 18th centuries by wood carvers from Trapani, true artists who had transformed their workshops into art schools, so much so that the city Trapani was given the title of "Florence of Sicily".
Each statue, also known as the "Sacred Group", was initially entrusted to the brotherhoods and only later to the workers, artisan guilds which still today are the true organizing machine of the procession. The preparation of the procession of the Mysteries is a real ritual.
Each group is decorated with floral compositions, antique silver and, during the parade, carried on the shoulders of about ten robust men. A procession of girls and boys, representing Lenten penance and popular devotion, frame the procession.
Characteristic and evocative is the so-called "annacata", a rhythmic gait with which the group is led by the porters. The Bearers, following the cadences of the musical pieces played by the bands, seem to animate the statues.
Fundamental for Holy Week in Trapani is the sound of an instrument, the "Ciaccola", which, used during the procession, marks the times of the routes by regulating the duration of the stops. The Ciaccola, similar to Spanish castanets or castanets, is held in the hand by the head of the group's bearers.
At the end of the procession, all the Sacred Groups are kept in the church of Purgatory, where they can be admired by tourists all year round.
